Facebook in its blog post named “High altitude connectivity,: The Next Chapter” Facebook has officially abandoned its gigantic Aquila Drone Project–launched by Facebook long back in 2014, to provide accessible Internet to the undeveloped areas of the world.
Facebook’s Yael Maguire announced via blog post that
“we’ve decided not to design or build our own aircraft any longer, and to close our facility in Bridgewater.”
also posted that closing the facility comes with the loss of 16 jobs specific to the development and maintenance of the aircraft.
The Solar-Powered Drones were expected to remain high up in the air between the height of about 60,000 to 90,000 feet, each drone orbiting in a 3-mile radius, activated to blast lasers of the Internet spectrum and deliver high-speed data.
Actually, the project was a subsidiary of the Facebook Internet for All initiative under Internet.org.
The decision was headed by a report from Business Insider that the project had more or less stalled: its head and chief engineer left last month after, from reading between the lines, efforts to double down on the project with a redesign and private hangar were rejected.
Yael Maguire- “As we’ve worked on these efforts, it’s been exciting to see leading companies in the aerospace industry started investing in this technology too. Given these developments, we’ve decided not to design or build our own aircraft any longer, and to close our facility in Bridgwater,” writes Yael Maguire, Engineering director at Facebook.
The company also stated that it will continue to work in its High Altitude Platform System [a.k.a HAPS] which radiate down Internet via systems installed in aircraft.
Facebook has also confirmed that it will continue to work in developing 3 Biggest Next-Generation technologies like
  1. Terragraph
  2. New infrastructure builds like Fiber Project in Uganda, &
  3. Express WiFi to support a large number of their Entrepreneurs who work in connecting people who don’t have access to the Internet.
anyhow facebook taking very strong & sharp decisions in all its futuristic projects in view of the latest Cambridge Analytica Scandal.
